The Faidherbe district is the epitome of a Paris on the move without losing its authenticity. Parisians love it for its dynamism and diversity: Haussmann-style buildings shaded by plane trees, a wide range of food shops, trendy boutiques, a host of services and apartment blocks.
It runs from the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, famous for its cabinet-making workshops and furniture shops, to the Bastille district.
It's a vibrant village in the evening, with bars and restaurants.
Rue Paul Bert is a haven for gourmets, with shops selling fresh local produce and restaurants such as Le Paul Bert and Le Chardenoux, now run by Cyril Lignac, who has also set up his first Parisian patisserie and chocolate shop opposite. Another typically Parisian establishment in the district is the brasserie "Le Bistrot du Peintre", founded in 1902 and bearing its current name since 1993. Renovated in 2012, it has retained its original Art Nouveau decor.
The start of the rue de Charonne, which leads into the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, rivals the Marais of fashionistas: it is occupied by fashion boutiques where the big trendy names in the sector vie for commercial space.
The Faidherbe district is representative of the changes that have taken place in eastern Paris over the last few decades. Many of its buildings have been gradually renovated, and it has not escaped the gentrification that goes with it. The population has also changed, but it is still home to a large number of families who appreciate its deeply Parisian character outside the tourist circuit, its commercial dynamism and its range of eating and cultural venues.
