The transformation of La Joliette, already spectacular with the renovation of the old Docks and the construction of a shopping centre, promises many more surprises. While the district already boasts Marseille's tallest tower, the 145-metre CMA CGM tower designed by Zaha Hadid, three others are due to be built on the Quais d'Arenc site in the coming years, the first of which is the La Marseillaise tower.
If you want to get to the Vieux-Port, don't hesitate to take the Rue de la République, which has over 200 shops where you can also do your shopping. It is also one of the city's most emblematic thoroughfares, with its Haussmann-style houses.
The recently opened Docks covered market will delight you with Mediterranean traditions. It is located in the 10.8 atrium at the north entrance to the building, opposite the Silo.
On the Joliette side is Le Silo (35 quai du Lazaret), a theatre offering a varied programme of theatre, classical music and dance.
For trendy bars, head to the White Rabbit (23 quai de la Joliette), just behind the Cathédrale de la Major. Here, rock'n'roll is the music of the evening. The establishment offers a wide variety of bottled and draught beers, which change every month, as well as great classic and made-to-measure cocktails.
A little outside the Joliette area, but still very close, one of the most fashionable and popular venues for young people in Marseille is the Palais de la Major (2 place Albert Londres). The venue organises aperitifs from 7pm, followed by evenings with a variety of themes. Just one piece of advice: go and enjoy this splendid setting and venue.
When you're in La Joliette, you're close to the Panier district and the Old Port, both of which are within easy walking distance. To do this, walk along the Boulevard du Littoral towards the MuCEM and take the opportunity to stop off at the Cathédrale de la Major, one of Marseille's most emblematic monuments.
From there, it's just a short walk to the city's historic centre: the Panier. With its picturesque little streets, buildings typical of the Marseille of yesteryear and colourful facades, this district is one of the must-sees.
From here, you can easily walk to the MuCEM, the city's flagship museum, or directly to the Old Port for a short trip into the city centre.
When the weather is fine, one of Marseille's 'places to be' is the rooftop Les Terrasses du Port (9 quai du Lazaret). With an eclectic mix of music and on-site catering to satisfy any munchies, it's sure to be a great night out. And don't forget the magic of the rooftop terrace, with its 360° view over the whole of Marseille. What more could you ask for?
