-THE ORIGINS OF THE RIQUIER DISTRICT
The district is named after a rich family from Nice who owned its land in the Middle Ages. For a long time, the area was planted with orchards and vegetable gardens. Close to the city walls, the area then attracted craftsmen of various trades, including coopers and blacksmiths, then small industries, breweries and urban transport depots (carriages, horse-drawn trams, then coaches). The development of the district took place following the destruction of the citadel and the city walls by Louis XIV. The city's urbanisation projects in the 18th and 19th centuries led to the creation of new roads outside the old walled city, as well as the digging of the port: another factor in the settlement of the eastern sector of Nice. The Riquier district is located to the north of the old town, just above the port district, between the Boulevard Risso to the west and the Corniche André de Joly to the east. Its southern boundary is marked by rue Barla, and its northern boundary by the railway line that runs alongside rue Auguste Galerie Prolongée.
- THE MUST-SEES-
A district that has become central to the Nice metropolis, Riquier now has a residential vocation. Its buildings are made up of working-class buildings built in the 1920s, contemporary residences, and a few remaining buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Esplanade Palace on the Place de l'Armée du Rhin, the Place Arson with its arcades and petanque courts, the old buildings on the port side of Rue Arson, several palaces on Rue Barla, the Maison Torrini and the Antoine Palace on Rue Leotardi, and the Bella Nizza Palace on Boulevard Antoine-Risso are all noteworthy. Very commercial, the Riquier district is home to numerous national and international brands, and in particular the large shopping complex on Boulevard Delfino Nice TLN. A green district, it has pleasant landscaped squares such as Place Arson, Place des Cigalusa and the green spaces of Nice TLN. Just a stone's throw from Place Garibaldi, the district is also very close to Nice Acropolis, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the green corridor of the Paillon.
With less spectacular architecture than the neighbouring districts, the Riquier district nevertheless offers a typically Nice face with its warmly coloured buildings, its narrow streets and its green squares. Property prices are also slightly lower than in the port area or in the western districts, with flats mostly located in more recent buildings, with less elegant architecture but more features. Parking is not the strong point of the district, as it is in the city centre as a whole. On the other hand, it is easy to get around thanks to the Nice Riquier train station located to the north-east of the district, and the tram line that serves it to the west. The district, very commercial and lively, allows a lifestyle all on foot. All the streets of Riquier are full of shops, terraces and food outlets. There are also restaurants, hotels, specialised shops and public and public schools.
