Around
In the 3rd arrondissement, near the Saint-Charles train station, the Belle de Mai was for a long time the headquarters of the Marseille tobacco factory. Its proximity to the Joliette and the Saint-Charles train station gives it a central position.
The district is home to the famous "Friche Belle de Mai": a disused factory, which became an industrial wasteland, was renovated and transformed into a cultural and heritage site in the 1990s. It is now home to the Municipal Archives of Marseille, a Media Centre and the Friche, a major cultural space. As for its name, it seems to evoke a "vinea bela de mai", meaning a late vine that is "beautiful from the start". A very nice name for this historical "red" district, today much more colourful, whose future is taking shape between real estate development and a village core with a thousand and one places animated by local life.
